Cascade at South Lake Union is a new lakefront neighborhood adjacent to Downtown Seattle and in close proximity to Queen Anne-Seattle. South Lake Union's revitalization and emergence as a regional destination and life sciences research center will contribute significantly to the growth of the greater Seattle economy. Visionary leaders such as the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Cornish College, Merck, NBBJ, Seattle Biomedical Research Institute and the University of Washington School of Medicine have chosen South Lake Union as their home. Initially planned to be a biotechnology hub of the Pacific Northwest, much of the development is proving to be residential, through construction of apartments and popular, loft-style condominiums.
Eastlake is a neighborhood so named because of its location on the eastern shore of Lake Union. The neighborhood contains a mixture of residential buildings including houses, houseboats, condos, townhomes, and apartments along with small businesses, especially on Eastlake Avenue. Though populated by all manner of Seattleites, Eastlake is a particularly attractive location for people with ties to the University of Washington, which can be reached quickly by a number of bus routes.
Residents agree that Seattle’s combination of urban sophistication and easygoing charm, with access to spectacular outdoor recreation opportunities make it a great place to live and play. A major cultural center, its sophistication is evident in its architecture, fashion, and arts. Surrounding Seattle are the glorious mountains of the Olympic and Cascades ranges and the seafood-rich waters of the Pacific Ocean. The Cascade Mountains, an hour’s drive east, have trails and peaks for hikers and backpackers. Snoqualmie Pass attracts downhill skiers, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and snowboarders. To the west of the city is Puget Sound, where sailors, kayakers, scuba divers, jet skiers, and anglers enjoy the water. Further west, the Olympic Mountains provide countless activities for adventure seekers.
Attractions in the Seattle area are as varied as its populace. One can catch a professional sports team at a Mariners, Sonics, or Seahawks game, head up the Space Needle for 360-degree city views or take in one of Seattle Center's many ground-level attractions such as the Pacific Science Center, the Children's Museum, the Experience Music Project, or the Science Fiction Experience museum. Visit the infamous Pike Place Market and wander through the fish, fruit, flower and crafts stalls, watching the fishmongers toss their hefty catch right before your eyes. Take the steps down to the docks and visit the Odyssey Maritime Discovery Center, the Seattle Aquarium, or the new Olympic Sculpture Park. Art galleries and antiques shops are prominent in Pioneer Square and all ages find both the Woodland Park Zoo and the Ballard Locks fascinating. If museums are more your speed, visit the Frye Art Museum, the Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture, the Henry Art Gallery, or the Museum of History & Industry. Or, head to Eastern Washington to taste the northwest wines of award-winning vineyards.
